The Mineral Resources Division is committed to developing the state's resource wealth to benefit South Australians. The Division drives forward growth and sustainable development of South Australia's minerals and energy assets within a world's best regulatory framework.

The work supports the vision of growing the mineral sector's reputation as a leading resource investment destination, and encompasses leading-edge regulation, environmental assessment and royalty administration to provide good outcomes for the South Australian economy and community.

Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA)

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Provide a comprehensive information and knowledge framework on the state’s geoscience and mineral resources
  • Undertake collaborative research with universities and institutions and work closely with PACE to foster mineral exploration and development and attract investment to South Australia
  • Delivery of geological mapping
  • Acquisition, maintenance, interpretation and modelling of geophysical and remotely sensed data
  • Provision of information and regulatory advice on mineral resources

Resource Information Branch

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the Government of South Australia's minerals and energy investment strategy
  • Coordinate an innovative framework of strategic activities across government, community and academia
  • Delivery of a wide range of geoscientific information that showcases South Australia’s mineral and energy resources prospectivity and competitive advantages, both nationally and internationally
  • Communication, event management, product development, publications, STEM education service, resource industry liaison, geoscience library, mineral economics and market analysis, minerals website and South Australian Resources Information Gateway (SARIG)

Mineral Tenements and Exploration

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Administration and grant of secure mineral exploration and mining titles pursuant to South Australian legislation
  • A key focus on achieving the South Australia’s Strategic Plan Target 41: Minerals exploration expenditure is maintained in excess of $200 million per annum
  • Assessment, approval and compliance monitoring of mineral exploration activities throughout South Australia

Resource Policy and Engagement Branch

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implementing policies and legislation that ensure South Australia has a strategically focused, coordinated and transparent approach to land access for mineral and energy resource development
  • Undertake a consultative/collaborative approach and build strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including industry, community and government which focus on outcomes that benefit access to land for multiple land users
  • Provide advice to influence state and national policy initiatives and agendas with respect to other key land uses such as planning, conservation, Aboriginal heritage, native title, defence, agriculture and renewable energy

Mining Projects

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work with project proponents, stakeholders within the department, within government, and with the community to facilitate major mining developments in South Australia.
  • Identify and manage risks to proponents, the minerals industry and the state
  • Operate as a collaborative team, delivering strategic advice, contributing to continuous improvement in mining and associated regulation, and influencing the maintenance of an environment conducive to mining investment

Mining Regulation

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Act as the principal regulator for mining operations in South Australia under the Mining Act 1971 and the Opal Mining Act 1995
  • Assessment of mining proposals, approval of mining lease conditions of operation, and monitoring of compliance of mining operations
  • Undertake responsibility for major remediation projects and the risk management of potential liabilities of former and current mines
  • Manage the Extractive Areas Rehabilitation Fund, ensuring the assessment and funding of extractives industry remediation projects meet the requirements under the Mining Act and associated Regulations
