3D models are powerful tools that convey complex geological concepts

The 3D modelling process allows geoscientists to test the validity of geological assumptions or hypotheses and provides a mechanism to validate existing data while also highlight gaps in knowledge and data within a project area.

Project boundaries for all 3D models can be viewed and downloaded from SARIG via the 3D Geological Model Areas map layer (located in the Geology layer group)

Viewing 3D geological models

All 3D models can be examined using either of the following free viewers.

Geoscience ANALYST is a free 3D visualization application suitable for viewing models created with SKUA-GOCADTM. Most native SKUA-GOCAD file format can be opened and examined using Geoscience ANALYST. ASCII, ESRI, geo-referenced images and Geosoft files can also be imported.

Adobe Acrobat Reader can be used to view 3D models that have been converted to .pdf format.

Interact with the model using Adobe Acrobat’s 3D Toolbar (the toolbar may vary with the version of Acrobat Reader).

You can also:

  • Selectively activate and/or deactivate any object
  • Click to identify objects

Some models may include these additional functions:

  • Adjust the vertical exaggeration
  • Activate a customised cross-section tool

Note: these models are presented as a 'proof of concept' only and their accuracy (spatial or otherwise) should not be relied upon for exploration or other decision making processes.
