Activities at the Whyalla steelworks are regulated under an environmental authorisation granted to OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd (OneSteel) pursuant to the Whyalla Steelworks Indenture 1958 (Indenture).

When the Indenture was last amended a sunset date was agreed, that provided the opportunity for review of the regulatory instrument particularly the environmental program as required under the Indenture framework. This review is to ensure ongoing best practice regulation and environmental outcomes.

The environmental authorisation currently applicable to the Whyalla Steelworks through the Indenture is approaching its expiry date (November 3).

To ensure operations remain compliant, OneSteel are working with the South Australian government.

The operator has submitted an application for a new environmental authorisation, pursuant to the Environment Protection Act 1993. The application is for OneSteel to continue to undertake existing activities at the Whyalla Steelworks site.

The EPA is currently assessing the application. As such public consultation on the application and comments are sought from interested stakeholders.

All comments must be received by the EPA no later than 5:00 pm 20 October 2025.

SAG will work with OneSteel to ensure environmental standards are maintained and the Indenture is updated to reflect the new authorisation as may be required as a part of the broader Whyalla steel works transformation.
