Santos and joint-venture partner Beach Energy Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS) project

Moomba CCS is Australia’s first large-scale onshore carbon capture and storage project. Santos’ Moomba gas plant’s infrastructure has been repurposed to extend the life of the asset which has been producing gas for 50 years to potentially store carbon for the next 50 years. Located in the Cooper Basin in remote South Australia, it represents a transformative engineering achievement that combines innovation and decarbonisation. It is a game-changer for Santos, our broader industry and Australia. As of 30 June 2025, the project has already stored one million tonnes of CO2e. This is equivalent to removing all electricity emissions generated by every house in Adelaide in one year.

There is emerging demand for carbon abatement technologies and the initiative, and its potential future phases, are critical to helping Australia and our regional partners decarbonise and reach emissions reduction goals.
