In a boon to South Australia’s energy security, seven successful projects have been offered grant funding totalling more than $15 million under the SA Gas Initiative to attract innovative gas projects set to secure essential supplies for South Australian use.

The Gas Security Infrastructure Fund, with support from the Commonwealth government, offering funding of up to 50 per cent of eligible spending for significant projects that will help the state to meet its mid to long-term energy needs and help shore up future gas supplies.

If they were delivered in full, the projects facilitated by this grant fund could deliver around 20 petajoules of gas into the South Australian market, boosting security of supply while putting downward pressure on wholesale gas prices. This volume would supply the gas needs of approximately 914,500 households each year.

Projects recommended for funding are located in the known Cooper and Otway Basins, and include drilling wells in new and existing fields, investments in pipeline connections, and assessing the feasibility of underground gas storage.

Successful projects include co-funding to:

  • Vintage Energy Ltd – two projects totalling $5m
  • Bass Oil Ltd - $3.5m
  • Beach Energy Ltd – two projects totalling $3.03m
  • Santos Ltd - $2.5m
  • ADZ Energy Pty Ltd - $1m
